●Keep的基本含义是“长期持有”。比如，替我保管钥匙“keep my keys”。进而可以转为“存放，保存”的含义。比如，把钱存放在安全的地方“keep money in a safe place”；保留起来，以备将来之需“keep this for future use”。天冷了，要穿上保暖的衣服抵御寒冷“keep you warm”。否则的话，冻病了可要在床上躺上一个星期“keep you in bed for a week”。
●如果“keep”后面加上人，指的是养活，加上动物指饲养。比如，养活一个大家庭“have a large family to keep”；我养了一只狗“keep a dog”。如果是“keep a flower shop”，可不是你养活花店。正好应该倒过来，花店养活你，即开花店维持生计。在这里，“keep”意为经营。生活的阅历越丰富，人们越清楚什么事情可做，什么事情不可为。明智的人总是谨慎地避免做不可为的事情“keep from doing impossible things”。而经过自己认真考虑所选定的事情，会坚持到底“keep at it”或用“keep up doing”表达。不管周围的人是否为你加油，你都应该继续下去“keep on”，在艰难前行的路途中，保持清醒的头脑。在很多时候，对于奋斗的人来说，跟上周围的变化“keep up with the changes”并不重要，紧紧把握住“keep hold of”自己的真实感受才最重要。
