●在美国电影《Forrest Gump》（《阿甘正传》）里，阿甘的妈妈曾经对他说：“You got to put the past behind you before you can move on.”（你得丢开以往的事，生活才能向前进。）我们都清楚这个道理，但并不是每个人都能做到的。把“过去”像放东西一样摆在一边，阿甘的妈妈选用了“put”这个最普通的动词，十分形象地传达了人总要向前看的理念。
●生活中的点滴细节正体现在一个个具体动词的运用上。“put”的基本含义是“安置，摆放”，如糕点师把草莓摆放在蛋糕上用“put strawberries on the cake”。泡杯咖啡用“make a cup of coffee”，喝杯咖啡用“have a cup of coffee”，而喝的时候如果要加糖就要用“put some sugar in coffee”。如果整理房间，需要把东西收拾起来用“put things away”，放回原处用“put back”。把东西放进抽屉用“put it into drawer”。可是你有没有想过，发脾气也可以用这个词组表达“put sb.into a bad temper”。会议延期是“put off the meeting”。倒胃口也用这个词，比如你会让我倒胃口，吃不下晚饭用“put me off the dinner”，“put off”在此处表达的是“丧失兴趣”的意思。“穿上”用“put on”，“打开灯”用“put a light on”。最令人头痛的发胖也用这个词。比如，我有点胖了“I have put on some weight.”。
●前面提到“向前看”，要做到这一点，必须做到今日事，今日毕“Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.”。
